Strowberry is a cooperative game where two players control a pair of raccoons disguised as a single worker stacked in a trench coat sneaking into a strawberry company to steal fruit without raising suspicion. The gameplay is asymmetrical: one player controls Bob, who looks around and performs tasks to blend in, while the other controls Rob, who handles movement and stealthily collects strawberries.
The game was developed during a game jam as part of the Belgian Xbox Game Camp. Teams could choose from three themes, and we combined “Outgrow Hunger” and “Friendship” to shape the core concept.
I was one of the main programmers on the project. While development was collaborative, I focused primarily on the player character systems and the vision cone shader.
The vision cone shader was my first experience writing a shader in Unity, and it became a key part of the game’s stealth mechanics. It works by selectively rendering objects based on their overlap with a dynamically generated mesh attached to the player. This mesh is shaped using raycasts to form the vision cone. Guard enemies are only visible when inside this cone, reinforcing the need for player coordination.
For the shadow system, I applied the inverse logic: the shadow is rendered as a transparent quad, but any portion overlapping with the vision cone is masked out. This creates a consistent visual relationship between visibility and concealment, enhancing the clarity of the stealth gameplay.
The game jam went pretty well, we got second place in both categories we participated in. We then polished the game a bit more and submitted it to the Games for Change Student Challenge, where we became finalists in the trailer category.
After everything was said and done, I made the game online multiplayer using Unity’s Lobby and Relay systems. It’s fully playable online, but it still needs a bit of polishing before I can publish it on itch.
